This winter on The Opera Platform

The Opera Platform’s videos have been viewed over 2 and a quarter million times since the launch 19 months ago. The success of The Opera Platform is contagious. Both opera companies initially involved and newcomers to the project are offering bonus content in the coming months.

Our Christmas show is a Russian tale based on a poem by Alexander Pushkin – Rimsky-Korsakov’s Golden Cockerel, live from Brussels on 23 December. This Laurent Pelly production marks a début for Alain Altinoglu as La Monnaie’s new Music Director.

On New Year’s Day, Komische Oper Berlin brings its revised version of Monteverdi’s original opera Orpheus in a musical adaptation by Elena Kats-Chernin, staged by Barrie Kosky in a joyful and colourful production.

Finnish National Opera offers Kasper Holten’s vision of Wagner’s masterpiece Der fliegende Holländer from 13 January. He brings the production to an urban environment and the tempestuous world of the international art trade, with the Dutchman as a famous Dutch artist who travels the world and feels he is drowning emotionally.

Space Opera was a commission of Opera Poznań last season from Polish composer Aleksander Nowak, born 1979. Its first staging was brought by Ewelina Pietrowiak, a young Poznań-native director. It tells a love story set on the first manned flight to Mars.

Mariss Jansons led the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra in this landmark production by Martin Kušej of Shostakovich's subversive opera Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk in commemoration of the composer's centenary in 2006. The magnificent Dutch soprano Eva-Maria Westbroek made her long-awaited debut at Dutch National Opera, available on The Opera Platform as of 17 February.

April will bring two further live relays: Donizetti’s Lucrezia Borgia with the legendary Mariella Devia from Palau de les Arts Valencia on 1 April; and the premiere of Barrie Kosky’s staging of Musorgsky’s rare Sorochinsky Fair from Komische Oper Berlin on 2 April.

The Opera Platform offers opera lovers and curious web-surfers the first part of a carefully curated European Opera Season, bringing the best of what European opera companies have to offer for the enjoyment of all; free, live and on demand.
