COVID-19 fall out; European opera houses stream performances online thanks to OperaVision platform.
Release date: 12 March 2020

As more and more arts venues face the challenges of Covid-19, the opera sector is turning to digital means to share performances with audiences.

The European Commission-funded opera streaming platform OperaVision confirms the launch of a month-long online festival of Mozart operas, freely accessible to anyone with an internet connection.  Between 11 March and 17 April 2020, OperaVision will stream six performances from four opera companies, live and on-demand.

The central events of the festival are the streams of La Monnaie’s Da Ponte trilogy, with all three pieces staged by the same artistic team. The directors Clarac-Deloeuil > Le Lab have interlaced the stories of Le nozze di FigaroCosì fan tutte and Don Giovanni, with most singers doubling up in two roles. Because of measures in Belgium to contain the corona virus, these productions will be recorded in the coming days for OperaVison, without an audience present in the theatre at La Monnaie.

Peter de Caluwe director of La Monnaie today said:
“La Monnaie/De Munt is a founder partner and strong advocate of the OperaVision project.  In these exceptional circumstances of not being able to play to audiences in our theatre, we are grateful that OperaVision enables our meticulously conceived and rehearsed Mozart/da Ponte Trilogy to be experienced through streaming.  I am also grateful to all the artists who have committed to performing the three operas under these unprecedented conditions.”

The OperaVision Mozart Festival opened last night with a live stream from Finnish National Opera & Ballet Helsinki of Don Giovanni, a new production which fuses modern and rococo styles directed by young Finnish actor-director Jussi Nikkilä, live.  Like other OperaVision productions, this stream will be available to view for free on the platform for 6 months.

Gita Kadambi, general director of the Finnish National Opera and Ballet yesterday said:
“Live broadcasts and recordings form an essential part of the online service of the Finnish National Opera and Ballet, which aims to reach an ever-broadening audience independently of performance schedules, geographical constraints or other possible challenges.”

The free online festival continues early April with performance of:
Die Entführung aus dem Serail in a mesmerising production by David McVicar first staged at Glyndebourne in 2015;
Il sogno di Scipione, written by a 15-year-old Mozart, in a production from the iconic Teatro La Fenice Venice.
